QTS’s North American footprint spans 30 facilities from Toronto down through the U.S. Sun Belt, but it is heavily concentrated in a handful of established hubs rather than spread evenly across the continent. The center of gravity is Northern Virginia, where data centers located in Loudoun County, commonly referred to as Data Center Alley, reportedly support nearly 70% of all US internet traffic, and QTS operates multiple campuses there in Ashburn and Manassas. Canada, by contrast, is represented by a single Toronto facility, reflecting how much smaller and more concentrated the Canadian market remains relative to the U.S. QTS itself began as a single Kansas facility in 2003 and grew across the continent largely through acquisitions — including Carpathia in 2015 and a DuPont Fabros facility in Piscataway in 2016 — before Blackstone acquired QTS Data Centers for $10 billion in 2021, a deal that at the time was the largest in data center industry history.
