Teraco Data Environments is South Africa’s largest vendor-neutral colocation and interconnection provider, operating facilities across Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban that host over 650 carrier, cloud, enterprise and content organizations. Founded in 2008, Teraco built what has been described as Africa’s largest data centre in Johannesburg, and it also runs NAPAfrica, the continent’s largest Internet Exchange Point, giving its facilities outsized importance as interconnection hubs for the region. Since 2022 Digital Realty has held a majority stake in the company, folding Teraco into its global colocation network while the South African brand and operations continue under its own name. Teraco’s business is squarely colocation and interconnection — customers rent cabinets, cages or wholesale halls and connect to networks, clouds and each other on-site — rather than selling its own cloud compute service.

Teraco is a colocation and interconnection company. It sells vendor-neutral cabinet, cage and wholesale space plus cross-connects and its Africa Cloud Exchange (ACX), which lets customers reach AWS, Google, Microsoft Azure, Oracle and other clouds via on-ramps inside its facilities — but Teraco itself does not sell cloud compute as a product.
Teraco operates in three South African metros: Johannesburg (its Isando and Bredell campuses, including the JB1, JB3, JB4 and Teleport facilities), Cape Town (Rondebosch and Brackenfell), and Durban (Riverhorse Valley).
Digital Realty (NYSE: DLR) completed the purchase of a majority stake in Teraco on 1 August 2022, with the business previously controlled by Berkshire Partners, Permira and other investors; Teraco now operates as "A Digital Realty Company."
Teraco's JB4 facility in Johannesburg has been described as the largest data centre in Africa, spanning roughly 80,000 square metres with 14 data halls comprising about 17,000 square metres of white space.
As of now, we don't have a confirmed AI-optimized (GPU-dense, liquid-cooled) facility on file for Teraco here. We continue tracking new developments.
Disclaimer: This page was compiled with a structured research and verification process from publicly available sources. A human decides whether each page is published, but individual facts — addresses, contact details, and whether a company operates in a given location — are not independently fact-checked by us. Where you see a “Verified” badge, it means multiple independent sources agreed, not that we personally confirmed it. Companies open, close, relocate, and change contact details without always updating public records, so treat everything here as a starting point, not a confirmed source.
